Clubbing in Shrewsbury…

Good numbers of Clubtail sightings are coming in from people seeing them right in the heart of town. Andy Beech has also been seeing White-legged Damselflies (left) also emerging from the River Severn in town amidst Demoiselles and clouds of mayflies.

Jan Shields sent in these photos (below) of Clubtail from the Frankwell area of Shrewsbury. The bottom 2 photos give a lovely illustration of the difference between the male and female wing shapes. If you look carefully you can see the male (far below left) has acute angles on the rear margins of the hind wing allowing space for the female legs during mating. The female in comparison has rounded margins to the hindwings.
