Saturday 11th saw the first Clubtails emerging from the River Severn and these were beautifully photographed by Jan Shields at Frankwell. Shrewsbury is a great place to see these rare insects emerging along the river banks often straight up the vertical sides of the fishing platforms in the Quarry. Just this morning Paul and Sandy Roughley also spotted 5 exuviae on the banks of the River Severn near Melverley. As their photograph (far below left) shows, the exuviae are really quite robust and distinctive and relatively easy to identify…and of course excellent proof of succesful breeding in the River Severn.
