Jan Shields has sent in the first photos of female Emerald Damselflies. Unlike the male they have no blue coloration and you can clearly see the ovipositor at the end of the abdomen. Jan has also spotted a male and female Ruddy Darter on her garden pond. The male is pictured below illustrating completely black legs, a black T shape on top of the thorax and if you look closely at the ‘face area’ you can see a frons side line extending like a moustache down the side of the frons. These features all separate this species from the aptly named Common Darter.
