Having been spoilt at the start of the summer with sustained hot weather leading to good numbers of dragonflies on the wing, it now seems sightings are few and far between. I’m still seeing a number of species between showers though rarely more than a few individuals. Jan Shields has had the same experience having to hunt for these Keeled Skimmers at Cramer Gutter where they are often present in better numbers. Jan’s photos illustrate really well the diagnostic ochre pterostigma on the wings of both sexes and the antehumeral stripes. The yellow antenodal crossveins are also clearly visible- a characteristic of this species and the more common Black-tailed Skimmer.
