Geoff Hall has sent in this fabulous head on shot of a Four-spotted Chaser seen at Whixall Moss. You can see the four spots – one in the middle (node) of each wing- that give this species it’s name. You can also see the four pterostigma towards the end of each wing which all our UK species of dragonfly have.
Geoff also sent in photos of Black Darter- male below left and female below right. Once the male is mature it is unmistakeable for anything else, but the female is trickier and you need to look for the black triangle shape on top of the thorax. Far below left we also have a female Emerald Damselfly- these are only just really starting to emerge, but are the most significantly declining species in the UK so worth keeping an eye out for and let me know if you see them…
