Geoff Hall has sent in this great inflight photo of Southern Hawker seen at Brokenstones just north of Woolston. Though I haven’t ever taken a photo like this, I have been lucky enough to have numerous close encounters with this species. The males in particular are known to fly really quite close to inspect you and this gives you the chance to easily spot the ‘headlights’ (broad antehumeral stripes) and ‘tail lights’ (spots joining to form continuous lines of colour at the end of the abdomen).
