As temperatures dropped and rain fell the dragonfly season it seems was put largely on hold until yesterday when a flurry of Large Red Damselfly records came in and this photograph taken by Tim Walter at Pam’s Pools Reserve near Bridgnorth. This shows a recently emerged female Common Blue Damselfly identified partly by the markings already visible on the thorax and also the presence of a spine under segment 8 of the abdomen. This is the second earliest sighting of this species in Shropshire and 1 of now 3 April records. The earliest sighting was made apparently on April 1st (April Fools Day?!) 2002 on the Montgomery Canal at Keepers Bridge.

The weather is improving into the weekend so more species will soon be on the wing…
