April is here and that usually means the emergence of our first Large Red Damselflies. The earliest ever Shropshire record was April 8th so it’s worth keeping an eye out (in between the endless rain) and you might see eyes like these photographed a few years ago by Julian Cartwright. Here we can actually see 5 eyes on the head of a Large Red Damselfly; 2 compound eyes and 3 ocelli (simple eyes) in a triangular shape in the centre of the head.

Whilst we’re waiting don’t forget to check out all the volunteering opportunities for the  Stepping Stones Project and please do get in touch if you’d like to help our Upland Dragonflies.
