Great news- Bob Kemp has recorded the first Willow Emerald Damselfly in Shropshire yesterday (30th July) seen in Comer Wood at Dudmaston. This species has been on our radar for a few years now so hopefully this will be the first of a few records this year. Bob was lucky enough to get this one photo which clearly shows a male with wings characteristically spread at 45 degrees, a long abdomen, large pale pterostigma and notably no blue coloration at all. This helps distinguish this species from our resident spreadwing Emerald Damselfly in which the male does have a blue pruinescence and blue eyes, dark pterostigma and a relatively shorter abdomen. Look carefully at all spreadwings you see and keep me posted…
