Mark Underwood has sent in some great photos from Pole Cottage Pools on the Longmynd – showing 2 of our sadly declining upland species that have both been classified as Endangered on the recently updated European Red List for Odonata. Shown left and below left are male and female Common Hawker -both showing clearly the yellow costa on the wing. Below right is the male Black Darter and the bottom 2 photos are female Black Darter. Both females and immature males have a diagnostic black triangle on top of the yellow thorax as seen here and the female also has a prominent vulvar scale projecting below the end of the abdomen seen clearly in this side view.
