Another day another Red-veined Darter! Harry Beaman recorded this fabulous male at Newton Mere yesterday (between The Mere at Ellesmere and Colemere). This is a textbook male with a single stripe on the side of the thorax and a pale stripe down the legs. You can also see the black line extending down the side of the frons, some beautiful blue coloration in the lower part of the eye and a red costa and wing veins. Common Darter and Ruddy Darter are also on the wing so look at all darters carefully.
Harry also returned to Ellesmere and took these lovely photos of Lesser Emperor including another wonderful image of a twisting body and horizontal head (below left). And just to stabilise I thought I’d post Harry’s photo of Common BLue Damselfly…4 of them!
