Identification

The good news is dragonflies are one of the most accessible groups of insects to really get to grips with. There are just over 50 species in the UK and only 34 species have ever been recorded in Shropshire.

The majority of species can be relatively easily identified simply with the aid of a good pair of binoculars. Only in a few cases will it be necessary to examine a specimen in the hand and with the aid of a camera there is no need to collect or preserve any specimen as photographs can be used to verify your identification with an expert.
