On the 6th June Tim Walter photographed this fairly fresh looking Common Darter. This close up enables us to clearly see the yellow stripe extending down the black legs – the most useful feature to separate this species from the similar Ruddy Darter. In addition if you look closely at the face area, Common Darter has no frons side line, just a black line at the top of the frons. In Ruddy Darter this black line extends down the sides of the frons looking like a long moustache!
