There have been a number of fleeting glimpses of ‘early hawkers’ up at Whixall Moss recently. Though unidentified there is a possibility that these could be Hairy Dragonflies. This species is very rare in Shropshire but has been recorded at Whixall Moss once before in 2013. If you’re up at Whixall keep an eye out; they are distinctively hawker-shaped though small and dark. The male has strong tapering antehumeral stripes and pairs of ‘blue pears’ running down the abdomen as seen in this photo taken previously by Bob Kemp.
